Why iPhone Screen Time does not add up, and what to check

Updated · 4 min read

When iPhone Screen Time looks wrong, the usual causes are Share Across Devices adding your iPad or Mac, how the report counts time while an app is on screen, a midnight reset, or a software glitch. Check which devices are included, compare days, update iOS and restart before you assume the number is broken.

Why does the total look wrong?

Screen Time is a counter built into iOS, and a counter can only be as clear as its rules. It reports time apps spend in use on the screen, grouped by app and category. Several quirks make totals confusing: it can include other devices, it resets at a set time, and some activities fall into categories you did not expect.

Before you decide the number is broken, work through the checks below in order. Most mismatches are explained by the first two.

Is Share Across Devices turned on?

This is the most common cause. If you are signed in to the same Apple Account on an iPad or Mac and Share Across Devices is on, the totals add up across devices. A 6-hour day on an iPhone may include two hours on a tablet.

To check, open Settings, Screen Time and look for the Share Across Devices switch. Tap the device name at the top of the report to switch between All Devices and this iPhone. If you only want phone numbers, turn the switch off, or filter the report to the phone.

Is the day boundary confusing you?

Reports run from midnight to midnight in your time zone. If you use the phone at 1 am, that time counts toward the new day. Travel across time zones can also shift the boundaries. When two numbers disagree, check that you are comparing the same calendar day and the same device.

App Limits reset at the same moment. A limit that seems to expire "early" may simply have rolled over.

How does iOS count time?

Screen Time counts time apps are visible and in use. It does not count the time the phone sits on a table with the screen off. Music playing in the background and a long call are generally treated differently from time spent looking at an app. If you expected a podcast to appear and it did not, this is the reason.

Browsers can also split time between the Safari app and the websites inside it. In the report you may see a category for websites separate from the app total. That can look like double counting when it is a split.

What if the numbers look inaccurate?

Try these in order. Each takes a minute.

If none of that helps, contact Apple Support. Apple's documentation for setting up Screen Time explains what the feature measures.

  1. Update iOS to the latest version. Screen Time bugs have been fixed in updates before.
  2. Restart the phone.
  3. Toggle Share Across Devices off and on again.
  4. Compare the same day on a second device.
  5. If the report shows no data, turn Screen Time off and on again. This clears history on that device, so note your averages first.

Should you trust the number?

Trust it as a rough measure. Screen Time is good for direction: whether you are going up or down over weeks, and which apps lead. It is poor at precision. A difference of ten minutes between two days means nothing. A difference of two hours between two weeks means something.

Look at the same view each week and ignore the noise. If you want a second perspective, think about pickups and notifications, which are easier to count than minutes.

How does Ebb deal with imperfect numbers?

Ebb does not use Screen Time data. When it asks for your daily average, it asks you to type it, and the Scroll Receipt labels every line as math on the number you entered. If your figure is off by half an hour, the yearly total shifts by about 180 hours, and the receipt still makes its point at a glance. See the Scroll Receipt for how it multiplies.

What Ebb does count itself is its own gate: each time it ran, the cost, and whether you passed or turned back. Those numbers live on your phone, and no one else sees them. The way to read the numbers is covered in how to check Screen Time on iPhone.

Can you measure scrolling another way?

Yes, with behavior instead of minutes. Count how many times you open a feed app in a day. The first-app-after-pickup list in the report shows which app you reach for. Counting opens is a more direct signal of habit than minutes, and it is the number a pause before the app can change on the first day.

What do pickups tell you when minutes do not?

Pickups are a cleaner signal than minutes. They count each time the screen wakes, and they are hard to inflate by background activity. If your minutes look strange but your pickups are stable at, say, 90 a day, then the minutes are probably roughly right and your habit is the story. If pickups are low and minutes are high, you are probably having long sessions, which suggests feeds or video.

Use both numbers together. A high pickup count with short sessions points to checking. A low pickup count with long sessions points to scrolling.

What if you use Family Sharing?

On a child's device managed by a parent, Screen Time may be controlled from the parent's phone. The numbers there can differ from what the child sees. If you manage devices for a family, compare on the same device and the same day, and remember that the child's allowance and downtime settings can change what is shown.

When should you contact Apple?

If the report is empty for days after an update, if Screen Time keeps turning itself off, or if totals are wildly different on two devices after all the checks above, the problem is likely in the system and not in your setup. Apple Support can help with a reset. Make a note of your last known weekly averages before any reset, because a reset clears history.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my iPhone Screen Time so high?

Check whether Share Across Devices is on, since totals may include an iPad or Mac. Then compare the same day on each device.

Why does Screen Time show different numbers on two devices?

Each device keeps its own data, and shared totals can differ if the devices sync at different times. Compare the same calendar day on both.

Does Screen Time count music and calls?

Screen Time focuses on apps in use on screen. Background audio and calls may appear differently, so do not expect them to match your listening.

Does restarting fix Screen Time?

Sometimes. Update iOS, restart, and toggle Share Across Devices before you turn Screen Time off, since that clears history.

How accurate is iPhone Screen Time?

It is accurate enough for trends over weeks and poor for small differences between days.
