How to set up iPhone Focus modes for work, sleep and home

Updated · 4 min read

A Focus on iPhone silences notifications except from people and apps you allow. To set one up, open Settings, Focus, choose Work, Sleep or Personal, pick allowed people and apps, and add a schedule by time, place or app. Start with one Focus, run it for a week, and add others after that.

What is a Focus on iPhone?

A Focus is a mode that limits which notifications reach you. Apple explains the basics in the guide to setting up a Focus. You choose people and apps that may interrupt, silence the rest, and optionally turn the mode on by schedule, location or app.

A Focus does not block apps. It reduces the buzz. You can still open anything, which makes it a gentle tool and a good first step for people who dislike hard limits.

Which Focus modes are worth having?

Three cover most days.

Other modes such as Reading, Fitness, Driving and Gaming are useful for specific activities. Add them when you notice a need. Having too many Focus modes creates its own clutter.

FocusPurposeTypical allowed
WorkFewer interruptions during working hoursColleagues, work apps, family
SleepQuiet nights and a calm morningFavorites and emergencies
PersonalTime at home without work noiseFamily, friends, hobby apps

How do you create a Work Focus?

Silence the rest. A notification from a feed during the working day is rarely urgent.

  1. Open Settings and tap Focus.
  2. Tap the plus button and choose Work, or use the Work template.
  3. Under People, choose who may notify you. Add your manager and key colleagues.
  4. Under Apps, choose the work apps that may notify you.
  5. Set a schedule: weekdays, 9:00 to 17:30, or when you arrive at the office.
  6. Save and check the Lock Screen.

How do you create a Sleep Focus?

Sleep Focus is tied to your sleep schedule in the Health or Clock settings. Apple describes it in the guide to turning Sleep Focus on or off. Choose only family and favorites as allowed people. Let alarms through, as they always do. Consider hiding Home Screen pages with feed apps during the Focus, so fewer icons greet you in the dark.

A wind-down period before bed lets the Focus start earlier than sleep, which removes the last hour of feed alerts.

What are Focus Filters?

Filters adapt apps while a Focus is on. For example, the Calendar can show only work calendars, Mail can show only the work account and Safari can switch to a work tab group. They are optional, and they make a Work Focus feel like a different phone. Add them once the basic setup works.

How do schedules and automatic activation work?

A Focus can start by time, by location or when you open a given app. You can combine them. A Work Focus that starts when you arrive at the office and ends when you leave handles irregular days well. A Reading Focus that starts when you open your e-book app silences notifications for the session.

Automatic activation turns the Focus from a task into a habit. If you have to remember to switch it on, you will forget.

How can you use Focus with Shortcuts?

Shortcuts can set a Focus as an action, and a Focus turning on or off can be a trigger. For example, an automation can open a note when your Sleep Focus ends, or turn on a Work Focus when you arrive somewhere. The guide to phone-use automations has more ideas.

Where does Ebb fit?

Focus silences notifications. Ebb, an iPhone app in development, adds a pause when you open a feed app anyway. It runs through a Shortcuts automation and shows a short focus round before the app opens. The two tools complement each other: one cuts the cues, the other interrupts the reflex. See the gate.

What is a sensible first week?

Day 1: build Work Focus with a schedule. Day 3: add Sleep Focus. Day 5: check what slipped through and adjust the allowed list. Day 7: decide on a third mode. Keep notes of the notifications that bothered you, and fix those first. A small, working setup beats a perfect one you never finish.

What are the most common mistakes?

People create too many Focus modes and cannot remember which is on. They allow too many apps and the Focus does nothing. They forget to share a Focus across their devices, so the iPad still buzzes. And they do not check the Lock Screen indicator, so a Focus stays on all weekend. Keep the number of modes low, the allowed list short and the schedule automatic.

How do you handle people who need to reach you?

Add them to the allowed list in every Focus that matters, and consider turning on repeated calls: a second call from the same person within three minutes is allowed through. This feature is meant for emergencies and works well as a safety net. Tell family that if something is urgent, they should call twice. It takes the worry out of silencing the phone.

Can you share a Focus across devices?

Yes. Focus can sync across your Apple devices, so a Sleep Focus on your phone also quiets your iPad and Mac. This setting is in Settings, Focus, Share Across Devices. If you prefer to separate them, turn it off and set each device on its own. Check it if a notification arrives where you do not expect one.

How do you know it is working?

Look at your notifications after a week. Count how many you received in your Work Focus and how many were useful. Then look at your pickups in Screen Time. A drop in both means the setup is doing its job. If pickups did not change, the cause is probably habit, not alerts, and a pause when apps open may be the better next step.

How do you test a Focus before you rely on it?

Turn it on from Control Center, then ask a friend to message you and call you. Check that the right people get through and the wrong apps stay quiet. Look at the Lock Screen and the Home Screen to see how they change. Five minutes of testing saves you from missing a call on the day it matters. Repeat the test after each iOS update, since Focus behavior can shift between releases.
